Study in China for Russians. Education in China for Russians

China's technological and financial growth is well known far beyond China. This is the second economy in the world after the USA and the first (!) in terms of the ratio of GDP and purchasing power. Moreover, if earlier the bulk of Chinese production accounted for copies of foreign products and technologies, this has recently changed. Increasingly, there are own developments, among them there are many original solutions, and some are even exclusive. The practical results of research activities indicate that education in China is already quite well established in the full cycle of education, from schools to research institutes and design bureaus.

Accordingly, the interest in Chinese education is growing in the world. Already in China more than 300 thousand students from 175 countries study and the number of applicants is increasing. They are not stopped even by the requirement to learn Chinese, without which most Chinese universities cannot accept applicants. Strict rules are not a problem either.

It is unusual for American and Western youth to observe tight schedule, take a training course exactly according to official textbooks, without the opportunity to choose modules that are interesting to you. For Russian students, an unpleasant surprise may be dress code, which operates in some Chinese universities. There are also problems with accessing online resources (for example, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Viber and many other resources are blocked in China).

What is it that attracts so much in Chinese education to endure hardships and inconveniences for its sake? First of all, China itself. This is a huge, very interesting and beautiful country with a history much older than that of Western civilization. Duty learning Chinese is also an advantage useful anywhere in the world. Everyone trades with China, and the value of a specialist who can negotiate directly is much higher. Moreover, the difference in mentality is much more important than knowledge of the language. Therefore, the translator will not be able to replace a person who lived in the Middle Kingdom, understood the local norms of behavior, and learned to establish contacts with the Chinese.

In addition, China consistently invests in universities, and this is noticeable in their appearance, technical equipment, teaching staff. All at the highest level. Huge landscaped areas, modern buildings, laboratories, research centers, libraries. Much attention is paid to sports. On campuses, and in general in Chinese cities, there are many stadiums, sports grounds, courts, swimming pools, gyms, all kinds of fitness centers and specialized sections. Students receive harmonious development, which is reminiscent of the approach of classical English colleges and universities.

Compared to European or American Chinese higher education is very cheap. This applies to both the payment of the tuition itself, and accommodation, meals, excursions on weekends and long vacations. China is rightly proud of its transport. High-speed trains, modern airports in all key cities, a wide network of intercity bus transportation, ships, ferries - getting somewhere is very easy, and students, moreover, buy tickets at a significant discount. Finally, the countries of Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Australia are nearby. There are not many countries on the planet that are so convenient as a base camp for long-distance tourism.

Universities in China

The Chinese education system is very similar in classification to the Western one. There is a bachelor's degree (4-5 years), a master's degree (2-3 years), doctoral studies. There are also postgraduate practices and internships in some specialties. There are less and less differences in methodology with Western universities, also due to the large number of teachers invited from abroad.

There are more than 500 universities in China available to foreign students. Many of these universities are included in international rankings. In addition, China has its own ranking methods - both at the federal level and within the provinces. In general, the best Universities in China can be represented by the following list:

  • Peking University
  • Tsinghua University
  • Wuhan University
  • Zhejiang University
  • Fudan University
  • Xidian University
  • Huazhong University of Science and Technology
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University
  • Harbin Institute of Technology
  • Central China Normal University
  • Hunan University
  • Northwestern Polytechnic University
  • Tianjin University
  • Sun Yat-sen University
  • Beijing Institute of Technology
  • South China University of Technology
  • East China University of Science and Technology

Such lists, of course, help to form a quick opinion about the universities. However, specialization must be taken into account first of all. As a rule, universities in China specialize in one of 12 specialties: agronomy, military science, natural sciences, engineering, history, mathematics, medicine, management, pedagogy, philosophy, economics or law. This allows you to concentrate as much as possible on the study of the main thing in each training course. When choosing a university, it is better to look not at general ratings, but at narrower ones, for institutions of a similar profile.

Language Proficiency Requirements for Chinese University Admission

A good command of Chinese is essential. The usual requirement for most universities is at least HSK-3, that is, slightly below the average on a scale of up to 6 points, where the highest mark means absolutely fluency. An important clarification: the academic requirements for languages are always stricter than the national average. So, HSK-6 requires knowledge of more than 5000 hieroglyphs. Native Chinese educated in China know about 3,000 characters on average.

However, HSK-3 is much simpler. It includes the study of a total of 600 hieroglyphs. It is realistic to learn them in a year or even faster if you practice persistently. There are a large number of HSK courses that help prepare for the exam, make test checks and practically guarantee the result. Such training can be completed outside of China, but life with full immersion in the language environment provides an undeniable advantage.

Knowledge of other languages is not critical for admission, and this can be considered an indirect advantage for Russian applicants. Although there are programs in Chinese universities that are taught in English, this is a rarity. Studying entirely in English and getting a Chinese diploma is almost impossible, except in private colleges with a very limited list of specialties, and much more expensive than the national average.

However, knowledge of English can come in handy because teaching materials in the Middle Kingdom often contain duplicate explanations in English. This greatly speeds up understanding for international students. For the same reason, Chinese is easier to learn if you already know English.

Tuition fees in Chinese universities

In terms of price / quality ratio, higher education in China is definitely one of the most profitable in the world. The cost of a year of study is only from $2.5 to $3 thousand. It is necessary to clarify in advance whether these amounts include the cost of obtaining a student visa and payment for accommodation. As a rule, no, and even textbooks must be purchased separately at your own expense. However, when compared with the prices for training in Western countries in similar specialties, the difference is large enough to leave money to solve all open issues.

Usually, universities insist that the first year of study be paid in full, and only from the second year you can apply for scholarships or apply for grants. This is done to check actual academic performance and diligence, which is highly valued in China. The chances of foreign students being paid for by the state are low. It is possible, but it will require really outstanding achievements. And they will also be compared with Asian students who are very persistent in their studies. For many grant competitors, Chinese is their native language, or they have been learning it for many years and know it very well. In a word, it is better to rely on your own strength and prepare money to pay for the full course of study.

Part-time work for foreigners living in China on student visas is strictly prohibited. The very procedure for obtaining a visa is associated with the signing of an obligation not to work in the country - otherwise the visa may be canceled. However, despite such a strict start, many foreigners break this rule. The Chinese themselves offer many different ways to earn money. Usually these are requests for help with learning English, less often participation in the modeling business or “white face work” for representative purposes at meetings, cafes, and sports clubs.

How to apply to a university in China

There are not so many formal requirements for entering Chinese universities:

  • Proficiency in Chinese at the HSK-3 level (minimum 180 points)
  • Documents on previous education (certified translations)

In addition, many Chinese universities have age restrictions:

  • Undergraduate applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age
  • Admission to the magistracy - for those under 40 years old

Of course, the prospective student must meet the requirements of the Chinese Immigration Service. This means the absence of a criminal record (a certificate, however, is rarely required), the availability of medical insurance (similarly, a document does not always need to be presented), a certain amount of money in the account (they can check). If the specialty is creative, you may also need a presentation or personal project, portfolio, recommendations.

All the nuances should be discussed after choosing a particular educational institution, because despite the general rules for all universities in China, there are corrective clarifications and additions in different provinces.

In terms of the number of patented inventions and the citation index of scientific articles, China has already entered the top three in the world: while the Celestial Empire is in third place, but at the current pace of development of science and education, it will displace Japan from second place in the coming years and stand right behind the United States.
The Chinese government invests heavily in infrastructure development, equipping institutes and universities with advanced equipment, while the cost of higher education remains very affordable for both Chinese residents and foreign students.

The cost of studying at universities in China

In higher education institutions in China, there are both budgetary and paid places. It is almost impossible to enter the budget: there are very few places, and quite a lot of residents of the country apply for them - gifted children, winners of national olympiads, children from low-income families. As a rule, foreign students pay for their education, the cost of which is much lower than in universities in Europe, the USA and other countries. Below is the estimated cost of studying at Chinese higher education institutions for an academic year and accommodation in Beijing and Shanghai. For convenience, prices are in US dollars. The cost is approximate, these figures can easily change depending on the university, specialization, personal preferences of the student.
All prices are in US dollars. In some educational institutions, the cost of education already includes the cost of living on campus. In small towns, education and accommodation will cost 1.5-2 times cheaper.

Why Choose China Universities?

  • Education in Chinese universities is mainly conducted in Chinese, but some undergraduate and graduate programs are taught in English. At any major university in China, there are Chinese language courses, as well as preparatory programs. At the exit from the university, graduates are fluent in Chinese.
  • In contrast to the democratic European approach to attendance and study deadlines, in Chinese higher education institutions, students are not given complete freedom to choose courses, time of attendance, etc. There is a clear schedule here, and students need to follow it: it is very disciplined.
  • In recent years, two dozen science parks with laboratories equipped with the latest technology have been created in major cities in China. Students who are passionate about science have the opportunity to conduct their research in these parks.
  • The campuses of Chinese universities are located in the most beautiful places: for example, the campus of Peking University, which is located on the territory of the imperial gardens, is a tourist attraction. The campus of the Chinese Academy of Arts is located on the shores of Lake Xihu, one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world.
  • Another important fact: the campus of a Chinese higher education institution, even a small one, always contains everything you need for study and work. Campuses are equipped so that students can not leave the campus for weeks.
  • The cost of living and meals on the campuses of universities in the Middle Kingdom always remains affordable for students, this fact distinguishes Chinese universities from European and American ones. Accommodation in comfortable rooms on the campus of a major university in China will cost 2-3 times cheaper than accommodation on the campus of a European university. Foreign students with high academic performance are provided with scholarships from various foundations, individuals, as well as government scholarships.
  • Education in China is always a clear practical focus. The competitive environment in the labor market has also smoothly moved to universities: students from universities and institutes of the Middle Kingdom are motivated to achieve the highest results from the first years of study.
  • Studying at a Chinese university for a foreigner is a unique cultural experience. Along with studying Chinese, a student can attend calligraphy courses (they are available at every major university), study the art of dance, painting and Chinese cuisine.

The process of admission to universities in China

A translated certificate or diploma with grades is definitely not enough to enter a Chinese university. Most programs at local universities are taught in Chinese (the state dialect of Putonghua, which is understandable to most Chinese), and at least intermediate language skills are required to study at a university. The results of a language exam known as Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi. As a rule, undergraduate applicants are required to have knowledge of the language of at least HSK level 3 (with a score of at least 180 points).
Master's students must provide an HSK level 4 certificate (with a score of at least 180 points). HSK reception centers operate not only in China, but also in other countries. It takes several months to a year to learn a language from zero to level four. For doctoral studies, knowledge of Chinese is required at least the fifth level of HSK.
Among the additional materials that Chinese universities may require are diplomas and documents on academic and non-academic achievements, a certificate of financial solvency, a motivation letter, recommendations from teachers and an academic resume.
English-medium master's programs require TOEFL or IELTS test scores for admission, and some universities have also begun requiring high GRE or GMAT scores (for MBA programs).
Large higher education institutions set internal entrance tests: usually these are written tests. They, along with residents, must be passed by foreign applicants. Some higher education institutions in China set age limits for applicants: for example, applicants no younger than 18 and no older than 25 can enter. It should also be remembered that a full secondary education in China takes 12 years, and graduates of 11-year schools may be required to make up for the missing year in preparatory courses or unlearn a year at a university in their country. However, most Chinese universities accept school certificates from different countries without regard to the number of years of study.

Chinese universities in world rankings

The efforts of the Chinese government aimed at developing the educational system in the country were not in vain. Even despite the need to learn Chinese, the number of foreign applicants who come to study in China is growing every year. And no wonder, since Chinese universities are slowly pushing American universities out of the world rankings.
In 2017, according to the ranking, 4 Chinese universities entered the top 100 best universities in the world, including Peking University, Fudan University, Qingau University and Shanghai Zhao Tong University. It is also interesting that many Chinese universities take pride of place in the rankings in certain disciplines and specializations. The most popular of them: mathematics, engineering and technology, natural sciences, chemistry and information technology.

Groups of Chinese universities

The higher education system in China is represented by public and private educational institutions (colleges, professional higher schools and universities), which are divided among themselves by the topics of the courses offered and the teaching methods. Unlike American and European universities, where hundreds of different specialties are taught at one university, Chinese educational institutions, as a rule, have a certain specialization (there are technical, medical, humanitarian, linguistic and other institutes). However, there are exceptions, for example, Beijing or Fudan universities, which offer education in two areas - the humanities and the natural sciences.
A couple of decades ago, private universities did not exist in China at all, but today there are several hundred of them throughout the country, but not all of them have the right to issue state-recognized diplomas. It is noteworthy that it is not so easy to enter commercial education, as well as state education - all applicants pass the competition on a general basis. Talented students have the opportunity to receive scholarships or grants from private companies and third-party foundations. Of course, students of state universities have more chances for funding.

Group of elite universities "K-9"

The Chinese economy has made a huge leap forward, largely due to the improvement of the country's education system and investment from the state and third-party funds. The creation of educational projects aimed at strengthening China's scientific potential has also borne fruit. One such project was K-9, which is an amalgamation of 9 Chinese research universities.
The K-9 group has been compared to the American Ivy League or the elite Russell University group. And not in vain, since the state fully finances the research and development of the project participants (about 10% of the country's annual budget is spent on research). Thanks to government support, China's Ivy League positions are steadily rising in the world rankings of the best universities.
Although the overall citation index of Chinese universities is below the global one, and European and American universities still retain the palm, however, some universities of the K-9 league overtake the leading universities in this indicator in certain scientific fields. For example, Fudan University has been a generally recognized leader in terms of citation of publications in the field of materials science for the last decade.
The elite group of research universities "K-9" includes: Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotun University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, China University of Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Harbin Institute of Science and Technology.

    Education system in China

The authorities allocate significant funds for the educational system, and the result of this is a decrease in the number of illiterate citizens to 15% of the total population. In its structure, the education system does not differ much from most others: after kindergarten comes primary and secondary school, then complete secondary, then secondary specialized and higher education. At school, students study for 12 years, but vocational education can be obtained after 9 years of study. There are few foreign students in schools, and not all institutions accept them, but only leading ones (key school).

The situation is quite different in Chinese universities: here the presence of students from other countries is a matter of prestige, and each university seeks to attract the maximum number of foreigners. To increase interest in entering Chinese universities, foreign students are given the opportunity to receive scholarships that allow them to cover a significant part of the costs while living in China:

    • government scholarships - issued in universities that have passed accreditation;
    • university scholarships - allocated from the finances of the university itself to encourage the best students;
    • scholarships from the city hall - are formed by municipalities to attract students from abroad.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the Confucius Institute scholarships - prestigious awards to those students who have achieved the best results in the field of Chinese culture and language. These institutions operate in different countries, and in Russia alone there are more than 20 of them.

How is training for citizens of the Russian Federation? Chinese universities enroll students twice a year. At the beginning of the first semester, groups are formed where, in addition to Russian speakers, there are students of various nationalities. Throughout the year, students practice writing characters and speaking skills to such a level that from the second year they can fully communicate in Chinese, study the specialty. About 80% of students cope with this task, the rest continue to study the language for another year.

There are many universities that use programs in Chinese and English, which helps to quickly adapt in the country. In addition, leading universities attract foreign teachers, including those from Russia. Of course, the main emphasis is still placed on the Chinese language, so most of the specialties are taught in it.

After a year of study, students take the HSK language exam, without which further education is impossible.

    HSK - Chinese language test

Those who passed the exam successfully have the right to choose the direction for further study. You will have to master the chosen specialty together with Chinese students, and it takes three (bachelor's) or four (master's) years.

    Popular destinations

In the PRC, Russians study a wide variety of subjects, with each university offering a host of in-demand specialties. A large percentage of students come to study the language, for internships in cultural studies and oriental studies, about 10% study banking, 5-6% each fall into engineering and medical sciences. But the bulk are future specialists in the field of business administration and management. Few teachers become Chinese teachers, since it is incredibly difficult to learn it perfectly, but after returning, such students are gladly taken to reputable organizations as translators.

To date, higher educational institutions in China train specialists in more than 800 areas. Particular attention is paid to the development of technology and science, and technical specialties are in great demand. In general, in the exact sciences, students of Chinese universities show the highest results, but due to the specifics of education, the number of representatives from Russia in this direction is small.

Rules for admission to Chinese universities

Entering to study in the PRC is quite simple, but there is one caveat: if you do not know Chinese at all, then at least you should speak English well. Not every university can have Russian students, and in order to communicate with teachers and fellow students, knowledge of English will be very useful.

Step 1. For admission, you first need to decide on the educational institution, contact the admissions committee via the Internet and clarify the list of documents. The standard list includes a prospective student's application, a copy of the certificate, a receipt for payment of the registration fee. The amount of the fee depends on the chosen university, and is 50-100 dollars. Please note that if you do not enter, this money will not be returned to you.

Step 2 Prepared documents are sent by express mail to the university (documents in electronic format via the Internet are not considered).

To start studying from the first semester, that is, on September 1, it is necessary to submit documents in March-June, for the second semester they are submitted in October-December. After considering the application from the selection committee, the candidate is sent:

    • notification that the candidate is enrolled;
    • invitation to study;
    • medical certificate form.

Step 3 The next stage is the preparation of paperwork for a student visa. Citizens of the Russian Federation need to contact the Chinese Embassy, which is located in the capital, or the Consulate General in St. Petersburg.

A visa is issued for the entire period of study, but upon arrival in China, it is necessary to settle all the formalities with study and residence within a month, otherwise the permit will become invalid.

Step 4 During a personal visit to the university, you should present the original documents and receive the schedule of entrance exams. Little time is given for preparation, but most applicants do an excellent job.

Step 5 After successfully passing the exams, it remains to pay the tuition fee and deal with housing. Hostels are provided for foreign students, it is also possible to rent a separate apartment. The hostel is much cheaper, besides, it allows you to quickly adapt to an unfamiliar environment and improve your conversational skills, but the conditions in the apartment are more comfortable.

    How to get a scholarship

For Russian-speaking candidates, some types of government scholarships are available. To qualify for them, you must meet certain requirements, which vary slightly depending on the direction, specialty and the university itself. Each country has a quota set by the government, and with a large influx of students, the chances of a scholarship are noticeably reduced.

You must apply for a scholarship before leaving for China. Such applications are accepted at the consular departments of the PRC from the beginning of January to the end of April, after which they are sent to the China Scholarship Council, a government organization that has the right to provide scholarships to students at universities.

Important! The China Scholarship Council may, at its discretion, change the specialty, the term of study, even the university. Selected candidates must begin their studies only under the specified conditions, otherwise the right to the scholarship will be canceled.

After reviewing the documents, the organization sends them along with a notification to the university, which, in turn, sends the package to the student.

Documents for applying for a scholarship
