Tyburtsy fed his children with stolen food, but Vasya, seeing how happy Marusya was with the food, ceased to be embarrassed.

Marusya was a weak girl, poor nutrition and living conditions did their job - she fell ill. Vasya wanted to entertain the girl and asked Sonya for a big doll, which her late mother had given her. Marusya is very happy with the doll, she even felt a little better at first.

Meanwhile, old Janusz comes to the judge with denunciations about the beggars living in the chapel, and tells that Vasya communicates with them. At home, the disappearance of the doll was noticed and the boy was put under house arrest, but a few days later he managed to secretly escape. Coming to friends, Vasya will see that Marusya feels worse. It was decided to return the doll to Sonya, but Marusya, who was in oblivion, began to cry as soon as they tried to take the doll away. Vasya did not dare to take the toy from the girl.

He is not allowed out of the house again. The father sternly asks his son about where he goes, where he put the doll. But Vasya is silent. The only thing he admits is that he took the doll. At the most tense moment, Tyburtsy enters the room, holding a doll in his hands.

Tyburtsiy has a long conversation with Vasya's father, tells him about the boy's friendship with his children. The judge is amazed, he feels guilty before his son. At this moment, father and son become close people. Tyburtsy reports that Marusya has died. Vasya goes to say goodbye to the girl, and the father sends money through him for the Tyburtsy family and warns that it is better for him to leave the city.
